Propeller repair service

Propeller repairs are one of our specialities. In most cases, this is worthwhile because it is more cost-effective than buying a new propeller. We only impose restrictions if more than 30 per cent of the blade surface is missing, as it can be assumed that the remaining blade material has also been damaged in such cases. However, we do make exceptions. We also repair apparent total damage to very old engines for which the owner can no longer purchase a propeller.

It can't hurt to check the propeller from time to time. Even slight contact with the seabed can cause major damage, even if the propeller shows hardly any visible damage. Imbalances accompanied by vibrations occur, which are transmitted to the shafts, bearings, seals and even the gearbox, where they can cause further damage. It is therefore advisable to have a spare propeller on board. We also press it so that it is largely "similar" to the original propeller.

Avoid attempting repairs yourself. Well-intentioned advice to smooth out small bumps and dents on the blade edges with a plastic hammer and file comes from less experienced professionals; this causes imbalances in the propeller, reduces efficiency – which always results in higher fuel consumption – and increases the risk of cavitation.
The sequence of a propeller repair seems amazingly simple, but it requires a high level of craftsmanship. It begins with straightening the blades on an anvil block that corresponds to the pitch of the propeller blade. We have a large number of such blocks, which are very valuable. Next, all imperfections are thoroughly ground down and the missing material is roughly welded onto the blades and edges. Then the exact diameter is ground, the blades are ground back to their original shape and the pitch and cupping are readjusted. At the end of the repair process, the propeller is balanced, sandblasted and painted. It is then packed ready for shipping and returned to the owner.
